RECORD RELEASE PARTY
Will Stenberg is a singer/songwriter who lives in a small cabin on the banks of the Willamette River with his dog and turtle, where he also writes screenplays and poetry. His new eponymous record balances literate, poetic lyrics with fingerpicked guitar, stately cello and piano, and occasionally flourishes of his punk rock past.

Shorty & the Mustangs was formed in Spring of 1996. Big Tex called some of his musician friends to see if they wanted to try something new. Having grown up in Texas (something must have gotten in his blood when he was a youngster), western swing music was calling him home. So they dug out some old Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb records and gave it a shot. Well, 29 years later they’re having so much fun they’re still at it. Other folks are liking it, too. They play the bars and honky tonks regularly around Portland, Oregon, and sometimes play at the local farmers markets and festivals.
Shorty & the Mustangs play a mix of western swing, honky tonk and roots country music. Lara Carlisle’s heart felt singing can get folks out on the dance floor with a Patsy Cline torch song or a Gram Parsons rocker. Ken Woodside and Phil Hornik, on drums and bass, lay down a strong dance beat while Mike Moore on guitar, and Mitch “Big Tex” Gilbert on steel guitar put in the twang and tears. Marilee Hord sings beautiful duets with Lara and plays the heck out of the fiddle.

https://www.facebook.com/paganjugband
The Pagan Jug Band is an all-acoustic, boot-stompin’ band featuring a mean banjo and a rockin’ guitar – throw in more strings, some brass, and a washboard and you’ve got a band that really knows how to get folks out of their seats and onto the dance floor! On any given Tuesday in Portland you’ll see them playing their weekly “Pagan Tuesday” show – where the band sometimes swells up to 10 members as long-time fans and random passers-by join them on stage to keep the music communal. The Pagans have a large body of original songs that they mix seamlessly with carefully curated covers and traditionals.

Meet Redwood Revue: A Portland, Oregon-
based Americana Country Rock band formed in 2023. Their sound, a revival of the 60s and 70s, features the seasoned lead guitarist, Briggs Yahn. This four-piece group quickly gained a following in Portland with their timeless music and captivating stage presence. Redwood Revue is breathing new life into the Americana genre, infusing classic elements with modern energy, making them a band to watch as they take audiences on a musical journey.
https://www.ravensingstheblues.com/steel-fringe/
Though from further north, Steel Fringe still captures the feel of Laurel Canyon country quite ably. The Portland outfit, featuring fave Barry Walker Jr (Rose City Band, Mouth Painter), offers up a pretty perfect debut EP — four songs of cosmic country that wind through the mountains and lay down a cascade of green hues and sumptuous harmonies. Feeling like The Byrds and Burritos are in their blood, the first single “Klickitat County” served as a nice entry point to what the Fringe are all about, but there are more expansive horizons embedded in their eponymous EP as well. The opener, “In My Head,” adds a bit of twang and ramble. It turns down the layered approach but lets pedal steel and a pump trolley pulse that pushes the song down the tracks, soaking in the sun.

Less of a trio and more of a triple-headed hydra roving through an alurring array of genre-blending styles, The Colin Trio is anything but typical.
Named after lead singer, guitarist, keyboardist, Colin Hogan, listeners would be hard-pressed to name any specific member of the trio as Lead. Whether it’s Colin’s knack for slipping in and out of musical eras with ease, or bassist Brian Link’s adeptness with any groove, or drummer Cheo Larcombe’s ability to start at the flick of a match, watching The Colin Trio perform live is akin to three improvisational masters besting one another at every turn between a cavalcade of Rock, Soul, Jazz, Funk, and the Blues.

It’s been a wild and crazy ride for the fellas in World’s Finest since their modest beginning as an acoustic duo in Portland, OR living rooms in 2011. With a songwriting style rooted in Americana, the band banks on their ability to transcend genres of all kinds. String-centric and bluegrass-inspired compositions seamlessly transition into 3-Dimensional Psytrance, Funk, and Dub soundscapes, leaving their audience with a full circle experience of emotion and dance. Their appreciation for punk and ska can be found peppered throughout their shows and albums, made evident by up-tempo, high-energy offerings. Never happy to settle, Chris, Dan, Sean, Evan, and Kirk continue to push through boundaries and challenge themselves, while hoping to inspire their listeners to expect the most out of what a band in the modern age can be capable of conjuring up.

Sequoia is a songwriter living in Portland, Oregon. Primarily raised in rural Vermont, with its nice colored leaves and pretty rivers, New England will always be part of him. Having a spread out family has meant living in several places along the East Coast throughout his childhood. Eventually, he moved to Los Angeles, and took a deeper interest in American Folk, Blues, and Country music. Until recently Sequoia lived in Richmond, Virginia where he’d fallen into a vibrant community of songwriters, and performed frequently for drink tickets and pool table quarters. His music is influenced by a transient life, and exposure to the vast American landscape in an exploration of melancholy, anxiety, and hopefulness.

THE JACKSON COUNTY KILLS are a HONKY TONK & COUNTRY SOUL band from Portland, Oregon that play super-charged American folk music. With the twang of a Hillbilly song and the undeniable beat of the Blues, they perform roadhouse Gospel to comfort the afflicted and celebrate the good times.
“Give us three chords and three minutes and we’ll have you cryin’ in your beer or stompin’ along.” laughs Matty Charles, singer and songwriter for the band. “We’re singing about real life. If I’m not the person in the song I probably know them.”
Charles’ plainspoken narratives use folk and country storytelling to draw the listener in. Lead guitarist, Brian Byrnes deftly improvises with ease while Kevin Major and Tom Armstrong on drums and bass respectively, keep the songs tight and focused. Charles and Byrnes sing and play guitar like brothers who anticipate each other instinctively.
“The Jackson County Kills debut album, HONKY TONK BEAST was awarded “Country Album of the Month” on Bandcamp for May of 2024 and is available on streaming platforms.
MATTY CHARLES & KATIE ROSE are a country-folk duo that craft dreamy songs of heartbreak and wonder with precise vocal harmonies and old time acoustic guitar playing. Their debut album, CATCHING ARROWS is available on streaming platforms.
TOM ARMSTRONG is a life-long musician who has been performing his original honky tonk songs for the better part of two decades. All of this experience is reflected in his self-revealing narratives about the sad side of love, delivered in a smokey baritone and drenched in twang.

Oldest independent music venue in Portland

The LaurelThirst Public House has been part of the Kerns Neighborhood in Portland Oregon since 1988. Since its opening, The LaurelThirst has strived to provide a great place for people to gather and eat good and reasonably priced food, choose from a large selection of micro-brews and wines (many of them local) and a place to hear the best local music that Portland has to offer in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
The LaurelThirst has been lucky enough to foster a community of exceptional and diverse people that includes its staff, musicians, neighbors and customers. It is a community that we are constantly thankful for.
